Functional brain mapping boosts early assessment of brain cancer treatment response
The first three months after standard radiation therapy for a brain tumor must be hell for patients and their families. The established MacDonald criteria for assessing treatment force them to wait up to 10 weeks for follow-up CT or MR to determine if the size of the treated tumor has changed. More »
Hitachi primes 1.2T Oasis for commercial launch
Hitachi executives hope their booth at the ISMRM meeting will serve as a springboard for sales of their open 1.2T Oasis, set to begin shipping this month. The new high-field scanner is the company’s chance to rekindle a market that has all but collapsed in the past several years with the advent of... More »
Radiologist finds potential in FIESTA for noncontrast renal artery MRA
Noncontrast, flow-dependent FIESTA offers a safe and effective alternative to gadolinium-enhanced MR angiography for renal artery evaluations, according to a study from Japan presented on Thursday. More »
Siemens casts Tim as its unifying thread
Above and around the Siemens Healthcare booth at the ISMRM meeting, the message “pushing the boundaries of MR” was as clear as it could be. The theme was driven home by pennants featuring iconic reconstructions of athletes into whole-body 2D renditions of muscles and organs. How the company pushes... More »
Ultra-high field MRI improves characterization of multiple sclerosis
Studies described during a scientific session at the ISMRM on Wednesday showed that diagnostic power and field strength go hand in hand when it comes to evaluating multiple sclerosis. More »
Diffusion tensor imaging shows promise in evaluating spinal trauma
A University of Maryland study suggests that diffusion tensor imaging may provide emergency room physicians with valuable information to assess the extent of injuries to the cervical spine. More »
MR mammography excels as presurgical planning tool in dense breasts
An Italian study involving 238 women has confirmed the value of MR mammography as a presurgical planning tool for appreciating the full extent of cancer in dense breasts. More »
Philips advances quantitative MR
Quantitative MR, characterized by the precise measurement of data points that underlie MR images, may one day provide an exact and definable basis to recognize the early signs of disease and response to therapy. Philips Healthcare is moving toward that day, developing techniques that quantify the... More »
Kaiser study of 3.3 million members finds single case of NSF
A comprehensive evaluation of Magnevist use among the 3.3 million members of Kaiser Permanente in Northern California has found a lower risk for developing nephrogenic systemic fibrosis than reported in previous studies in renal disease patients who received gadolinium-based MR contrast media. More »
Desk-sized MR scanner shows potential for rheumatoid arthritis patients
Assessment with MR is essential for the early detection of rheumatoid arthritis in the hands and the monitoring of drug therapy, but hand studies are not cost effective. That’s where the Japanese firm MR Technology of Tsukuba, in the prefecture of Ibaraki, comes in. More »
Cardiac coil boosts data acquisition on Toshiba 1.5T
Quality Electrodynamics has constructed and tested a 32-channel cardiac array for use on the Toshiba 1.5T Vantage Atlas that its developers say will provide acceleration factors in any direction, including oblique phase-encoding, which is often applied in cardiac imaging. More »
MRS glutamate measures reflect heroin craving
New MR spectroscopy findings indicate that changes in brain glutamate levels reflect changes in heroin craving among addicts during methadone maintenance therapy. MRS may eventually help predict if addicts will relapse after treatment. More »
MR elastography shakes up assumptions about body MR
MR elastography debuted on Tuesday as a clinical application ready for diagnostic uses in the liver and many diagnostic niches elsewhere in the body. More »
Medrad launches prostate education
Medrad unveiled an educational program at the ISMRM meeting designed to teach the operators of GE Signa scanners how to perform prostate MR with its eCoil Endorectal Coil. More »
Prostate imaging studies weigh diagnostic power of MRI methods
A clinical trial presented Monday demonstrated how complicated the quantification of dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI of suspected prostate cancer can be. More »

GE launches new 3T scanner at ISMRM meeting

GE launches new 3T scanner at ISMRM meeting

Three T took a giant step forward with the unveiling May 5 of GE Healthcare's new Signa MR750. The product, which cleared the FDA days before its debut in Toronto, simplifies and speeds both academic and routine studies with accelerated scan and reconstruction times, improved image uniformity, better resolution and extended anatomical coverage. Greg Freiherr has the report.

Philips pursues quantitative MR at ISMRM meeting

Philips pursues quantitative MR at ISMRM meeting

Quantitative MR promises to add precision to a modality that, since its beginning, has depended on subjective interpretation. Exact measurements of scar tissue in the myocardium, for example, or blood volume in tumors may provide absolutes in the definition of disease and patient prognosis. No venue is more appropriate for such work than the ISMRM meeting in Toronto. Greg Freiherr has the report.

Tim coils help Siemens push the boundaries of MR

Tim coils help Siemens push the boundaries of MR

With the largest selection of MR scanners in the industry, Siemens Healthcare is positioning its Tim (total imaging matrix) technology as the thread that keeps them all together and meeting customers' needs. Tim, now marking its five year anniversary in the marketplace, is a seamless, whole body surface coil and RF technology. On the ISMRM exhibit floor, Jeff Bundy, Siemens' vice president of the MR division, framed the company’s portfolio of advanced coils as the means to unlock the power of Tim. Greg Freiherr has the report.
