Imaging plays central role in molecular medical research
--By: James Brice
Johns Hopkins University radiologists are using smoothly meshed mechanical gears for a clockwork analogy that explains the importance of multidisciplinary cooperation in their molecular imaging research efforts. In an animated chart on the JHU molecular imaging lab's Web site (icmic.rad.jhmi.edu), visitors can learn about complex interdisciplinary relationships that lead to molecular imaging discoveries. The mechanism covers the evolution of new applications, beginning with molecular biology and ending with improved patient care.
"To rotate smoothly, every subunit must work in conjunction with the others," said chart designer Dr. Meiyappan Solaiyappan, a faculty research associate. "This is designed to bring people together and promote research through interdisciplinary exchanges without restricting the flow of information."
