If form follows function, redesigned reading rooms should follow PACS.
Froedtert Memorial Lutheran Hospital and the Medical College of Wisconsin followed a user-centered design process, an iterative loop that involved the end user from beginning to end in three phases: analysis, design, and evaluation.
During the analysis phase, the hospital used interviews and demographic questionnaires to find out who the users were and what they were doing. From information collected in phase one, design concepts were developed for the average user. Finally, a mock-up design was created and tested.
The final design was outsourced for construction. One option not considered used the ultimate ergonomic indulgence: reclining workstations. They may not be that far off. Herman Miller, a leading provider of office furniture, now recommends reclining environments in certain situations.
