As an information technology investment, PACS can't stand on its own, according to a SCAR special session. But PACS can pay off in other ways.
Children's Hospital Boston spent about $9 million to save $3.1 million in film handling, storage, and related costs, said David Kirshner, the hospital's chief financial officer.
Children's plans to grow 4% to 6% a year in terms of exams per radiologist and exams per technician, and PACS will be necessary to deal with the procedural growth, he said. PACS can also help attract the best radiologists because it allows them to leverage their clinical potential. Before its PACS project, Children's was the only major Boston teaching hospital and the only one of the top 10 pediatric institutions in the nation without a PACS.
