 | German interventionalists, having previously used MR guidance during laser-induced interstitial thermotherapy (LITT) of liver tumors, continued the practice when they began ablating lung tumors with laser. The ablated tumor experiences an increase in the T1 relaxation time, which manifests as a decrease in signal. Although this allows interventionalists to see the ablated tissue, they could not visualize the safety margin. Switching to CT guidance, they discovered they could observe the ablation nicely because of an air-trapping process that occurs in the surrounding ablated area.
