Want to boost your cardio exercise and practice radiology at the same time? Two University of Maryland studies suggest it can be done by reading images on a unique "walkstation" treadmill. Adding classical music will improve your attitude.
The walkstation study found an increase in sensitivity among 20 radiologists who read chest x-rays while walking at 1 mph compared with sitting and standing. Researchers also found a slight increase in systolic blood pressure and heart rate when the radiologists were dictating studies.
The music study evaluated 10 radiologists who listened to baroque music while reading images and found significant mood and job satisfaction improvement.
Both studies cited earlier work showing benefits of music and exercise in a work envi-
ronment. They were presented at the 2009 Society for Imaging Informatics in Medicine meeting.
