Study recommends normal breast screening for transsexual women; sex expert disagrees
July 28, 2010

Breast screening habits for transsexual women shouldn’t differ from those of biological women, according to a recent European study. However, a human sexuality expert disagrees, saying screening for transsexual women should depend on when the patient started estrogen therapy and not age alone.

California leads radiation dose regulation efforts
July 23, 2010

Because of all the attention currently focused on radiation dose, a California imaging bill addressing radiation exposure has the potential to spread like wildfire to other states. California is a state that doesn’t wait for others to address a problem, so it’s possible similar bills could pop up around the country. The bill has passed the California senate and is now in the California Assembly Appropriations Committee with a hearing set for Aug. 4. Sen. Alex Padilla (D-Pacoima) is lead sponsor of the bill.

Protecting your radiology contract: Quality from the hospital’s perspective
July 21, 2010

From the hospital's perspective, a radiology group's quality is measured by quality assurance reporting, working well with others, participating on medical staff committees, and other administrative duties. Still, a highly competent radiology practice, one with "quality" radiologists, can lose a contract over basic service issues, nonphysician interpersonal relationships, or other common administrative expectations.

Neurologists say MR, not CT, should be used for stroke, but practical questions arise
July 16, 2010

The American Academy of Neurology has weighed in heavily on the side of MR as opposed to noncontrast CT for the diagnosis of stroke patients in its newly published practice guidelines. However, the practice may not be feasible in the real world, according to a neuroradiology expert.

Focal Point: CT Dose

Sponsored by Siemens

Vendors continue to improve strategies for reducing dose exposures from x-ray based imaging. This comes none too soon because the risk from medical imaging-based radiation exposure has captured the imagination of the public, so much so that there are reports patients are avoiding needed CT scans out of fear of the radiation
