At its most basic, tumor ablation is a method of destroying a tumor without
major surgery. A needle electrode inserted inside the tumor produces either
extreme heat or extreme cold, which destroys the tumor from the inside out.
Tumor ablation therapies are a method of targeting and destroying a tumor from the inside out. The most common type of tumor ablation is radiofrequency ablation (RFA).
RFA and other tumor ablation therapies are already widely used to treat liver
tumors and to eliminate painful bone tumors. RFA treatment of liver tumors has
been approved by the FDA for almost a decade, and some researchers recommend
that RFA be the first-line treatment for tumors in that organ.
RFA is a minimally invasive treatment, so it is less taxing on the body than
surgery. In many cases, it can be performed on an outpatient basis.
RFA is a very safe procedure. It is minimally invasive—unlike surgery, your
doctor will not make any major incisions.
RFA is not a new technology; the method has been used for decades to treat
benign bone tumors and some heart conditions. RFA is currently approved by the
FDA to treat liver tumors that are not eligible for surgery, painful bone
tumors, and other soft-tissue tumors.
Tumor ablation is a method of treating cancer that is often used when other
cancer treatments are not possible. For example, radiofrequency ablation, which
is one type of tumor ablation, can treat tumors that are not eligible for
surgery because the patient is too weak for surgery, the tumor is located in an
area that is not reachable by surgery, or the tumor is not responding to other
treatments.
Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is a minimally invasive method of destroying tumors that cannot be removed surgically. It is safe, fast, relatively inexpensive, and has been proven to work.
