Manuscript Guidelines
Manuscripts will not be returned, and authors should retain a copy for reference. All manuscripts should be double-spaced. A floppy disk with the manuscript saved in Microsoft Word if possible, and, if not, in Text Only is strongly preferred, along with hard copy.
Please indicate on the disk the software program and version used (Word Perfect 3.0, Microsoft Word 5.2, etc.) and whether it is a PC or Mac disk. A disk is preferable to e-mail transmission of the file, due to compatibility problems. If you must send your article by e-mail, please send it as an attachment, rather than embedded in the e-mail message.
Style
Title page should include full names, degrees and titles of authors, and affiliations (name of institution, city and state) for use in a byline, as well as phone and fax numbers to facilitate sending edited copy back to author for approval.
Define all symbols, abbreviations and acronyms on first reference.
All manuscripts should be written in a third-person style, unless the article is specifically an editorial or first-hand review.
References
A maximum of 25 references is suggested. Complete references should be listed in order of citation in text, NOT alphabetically. Our reference format is: Long RS, Roe EW, Wu EU, et al. Membrane oxygenation: radiographic appearance. AJR 1986;146:1257-1260. Up to four authors will be listed; if there are five or more authors, only the first three will be listed, followed by et al. Within the text, reference numbers should appear as footnotes in parentheses or in superscript text at the end of each appropriate citation. Please do not use Microsoft Words endnote feature, as this causes major problems in the editing phase.
Art and Tables
Cite all figures and tables in text, preferably in consecutive order. Please include a caption for each figure. All captions for each figure. All captions should be separate from the text, at the end of the manuscript. Captions should avoid duplication of text material. Credit lines for artwork can appear at the end of the corresponding caption by stating: (Provided by first initial, last name).
Do not embed figures, charts, or graphs into your document file. Please provide them as a separate file, as well as hard copy.
If sending color images, original color slides are preferred. Diagnostic Imaging will assume the cost of producing color separations.
In all other cases, black and white, 5 x 7 glossy prints or slides are desirable. We can also work from x-ray film or transparencies, if necessary. Duplicate copies of images are not necessary. All images must be clearly numbered, along with the authors name, on the back of each print, with the correct top, bottom, left and right orientations indicated.
Digital image files are not preferred in any case. If you must send digital images, please send them early so we can determine if they are usable. Call Jennifer Deane at 415/947-6473 to discuss format, resolution, and size requirements.
Any images in slide, x-ray or transparency form should also be clearly labeled on the slide case or film to indicate figure number, author and correct orientation.
Arrows stuck onto images for purposes of delineation should be clearly visible and reproducible. Arrows should not be stuck to transparencies but instead marked on an attached, overlaid piece of tracing paper.
Authors should indicate if they would like to have artwork returned.
Each table should have a title, and all abbreviations should be spelled out or explained in a footnote.
Editing and Printing Process
Diagnostic Imaging reserves the right to edit, revise and abridge contributions to conform to our editorial standards and style. A copy of the edited text is sent back to the author for approval before publication.
The editor does not guarantee publication of an assigned article in any specific issue; publication may be delayed due to space or other editorial considerations.
If desired, the author can arrange to have reprints of the article reproduced, at the authors expense, without adjacent advertising and on a limited choice of paper stock. The minimum number of reprints, however, is 500. For reprints, please call Andrea Ramiza at 714/376-6273.
