Hologic hopes to enter a strategic alliance with Agfa to help develop its amorphous selenium digital mammography system. The collaboration, which could be finalized in the next several months, would leverage Agfa's strength in image processing optimization and system integration. Hologic announced its intent to enter a similar alliance late last year with Siemens Medical Solutions (SCAN 12/26/01). The finished version of the digital mammography system would include PACS, data acquisition, and hard-copy readout. Hologic would manufacture systems for sale under its own label as well as that of Agfa. Hologic's alliance with Agfa, if consummated, would also provide for reciprocal distribution rights of Hologic's and Agfa's medical image management systems and workstations.
