CAMBRIDGE, Mass., Feb. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- InterSystems Corporation today announced that Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center (DHMC) has implemented a revenue cycle solution from IDX Systems Corporation that is built on the post-relational CACHE database. The implementation, an upgrade for long-standing IDX customer DHMC to IDX's next-generation business performance solution, Flowcast(TM), went live yesterday. This highlights a partnership among InterSystems, IDX and DHMC that has resulted in two decades of successful IT innovation. InterSystems made the announcement at the HIMSS 2004 conference in Orlando, Fla.
"InterSystems and IDX have helped us reach our care delivery and business objectives year-in and year-out for more than 20 years," says DHMC Senior Vice President and CIO Peter Johnson. "Our history with both companies is one of continuous improvement that allows us to build on our early achievements in order to take advantage of new and changing technologies. We have a long-term, consistent commitment to InterSystems and IDX, their products and application partners."
The leading provider of database technology in healthcare, InterSystems develops and markets the CACHE post-relational database. All of the top 10 hospitals in America, as rated by U.S. News and World Report, are running CACHE-based systems.
A comprehensive revenue cycle management system for hospitals, integrated delivery networks and large physician group practices, Flowcast is one of a family of healthcare application systems offered by IDX. "DHMC has made a clear statement of the value they are receiving from our close working partnership with InterSystems," says IDX President and COO Tom Butts. "Our joint commitment to deliver optimal healthcare solutions worldwide continues to provide a foundation for corporate growth and customer success."
Object Development Capabilities, Web Functionality Drive Implementation
Located in Lebanon, N.H., DHMC is an integrated academic medical center that comprises Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital, the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Clinic (a network of more than 900 primary and specialty care physicians located throughout New Hampshire and Vermont), Dartmouth Medical School and the VA Medical and Regional Office Center in White River Junction, Vt.
DHMC is a healthcare leader in leveraging information technology to cut costs and improve care delivery-a position acknowledged most recently when it was named one of the nation's "Most Wired" medical centers, according to a 2003 survey published in Hospitals & Health Networks. The decision to move to CACHE 5-based Flowcast was a logical result of that positioning, according to Johnson.
"We've seen object-oriented development taking off in the last few years, and that's the direction we're taking," Johnson says. "CACHE 5 offers advanced object capabilities, as well as rapid development of high-performance Web applications." For example, CACHE 5 eliminates any need for developer-defined mapping of XML to internal database structures, enabling faster application development.
"Our solution from IDX makes full use of the rich feature set in CACHE 5," notes Johnson. "It offers improved underlying capabilities, accessibility via the Web and enhanced ability to interoperate with disparate systems," he says. Interoperability is critical in the DHMC environment, which includes a wide variety of applications running on a network that includes more than 6,000 PCs in 75 sites across New Hampshire and Vermont.
"DHMC will also be using CACHE 5 for in-house application development," Johnson says. Functionality such as transactional bit-map indexing, which provides the query performance advantages of advanced indexing technology with update performance equal to that of traditional indexes, will be fully exploited in systems such as the DHMC operating room management system, which is scheduled for a rewrite.
"We've worked closely with DHMC to help them fully utilize CACHE functionality," says InterSystems Vice President of Strategic Planning Paul Grabscheid. "It's a pleasure to help them implement their vision of delivering high-quality care in the most cost-effective way possible."
