Patient swallows multiple foreign bodies.
This patient presented after having swallowed numerous nails, as can be seen on this abdominal KUB radiograph. The image reveals multiple foreign bodies projected over the expected location of the stomach, duodenum, and distal small bowel loops.
Key Take-aways: When faced with a similar image, look for free air that would indicate the presence of any foreign body that could have resulted in perforation. However, to exclude perforation, free air, or abscess – if signs of infection are present – as well as other complications, additional CT imaging may be necessary. In addition, conduct serial imaging to monitor the patient and to ensure the foreign bodies move through the GI tract.
