Acuson of Mountain View, CA, last week reported a healthy 7.6% increase in sales for its first quarter (end-April), but the company's profit dipped slightly. The ultrasound manufacturer said that it sees signs of economic recovery in Europe, while Asia is still weak due to that region's ongoing currency crisis.

For the quarter, Acuson posted revenues of $115.8 million, compared with $107.6 million in the first quarter of 1997. The company's net income was $5.7 million, compared with $5.8 million in the same period the year before.
