A digital imaging system designed by Varian Medical Systems to improve the precision and effectiveness of cancer radiotherapy is operating at the Karolinska University Hospital in Stockholm, Sweden. The On-Board Imager allows physicians to precisely target tumors during image-guided radiation therapy. X-ray images of the patient's tumor obtained with the On-Board Imager are matched with CT scans to ensure that the tumor is aligned with the radiation beam according to the treatment plan. If it is not, the aim of the beam can be adjusted before treatment begins. The On-Board Imager is a standard feature on Varian's Trilogy linear accelerators and an option on its high-energy Clinac linear accelerators.
