Data storage manufacturer EMC of Hopkinton, MA, last month signed an agreement to acquire Data General of Westboro, MA, for $1.1 billion in stock. The transaction is subject to approval by Data General shareholders, as well as regulatory review, and should close by the end of the year.
In a statement, Data General emphasized its commitment to its healthcare and PACS efforts, which have been bearing fruit lately. The company announced that it will provide a PACS to South Koreas Gil Medical Center, intended for the hospitals main campus and to automate the centers main radiology unit. With 1300 beds, Gil Medical Center, located in Inchon City, South Korea, is the second-largest hospital in the country.
The network installed there will produce 7.5 TB of image data each year. Data General will work with its PACS partner MarkCare Medical Systems on the installation. The Korean contract represents another coup for MarkCare, which received a contract in July from its distributor, Santax A/S, for the IntraScan II PACS software to be installed at Ulleval Hospital in Oslo, Norway. The Santax contract should produce revenues of about $1.5 million for MarkCare, according to the Bloomfield, NJ-based company.
