Clinical information system vendor Marquette Medical Systems has begun efforts to develop more open healthcare data interchange applications using XML technology, a Web-based data format standard developed by industry group World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). XML offers the most convenient and accessible platform for electronic sharing of complex medical reports and records in a distributed healthcare environment, according to Marquette officials. The Milwaukee-based company also feels that Internet/intranet-based technologies such as XML, when used in conjunction with the HL-7 standard, will lead to the creation of a healthcare industry-wide interoperability standard.
