CHANTILLY, Va., Feb. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Medicomp Systems today released MEDCIN+(TM), adding a ground-breaking real-time alert capability to MEDCIN(R) products currently used in many electronic medical record (EMR) systems.

MEDCIN's intelligent clinical engine provides support for physicians at the point of care. The new MEDCIN+ with alerts signals physicians about dangers in tests ordered, procedures requested, or medications prescribed. MEDCIN's alerts enable a physician to perform a problem-oriented review of the patient's chart and decide whether to continue with, modify or cancel an order. With each keystroke it performs a 100% check of the patient's entire history in milliseconds.

"What matters in medicine happens at the point of care. MEDCIN+ alerts enables a new generation of computer capabilities in medicine. It's the most important development in making the EMR useful in caring for patients in real time," said Peter S. Goltra, CEO of Medicomp.

The alerts engine, developed with physicians in the Cornell, Harvard, and other medical systems, includes over 130,000 alert conditions with four levels of potential severity.

"As medicine has become so complex, Medicomp's alerts elevate the computerized medical record to that of guardian of safe patient care," said Edmund Herrold, MD, PhD, Associate Professor of Medicine, Weill Medical College, Cornell University.

MEDCIN+ also has an interface available to Gold Standard Multimedia's electronic drug information and medication management database, Clinical Pharmacology. Medicomp will be demonstrating MEDCIN+ at the upcoming Health Information Management Systems Symposium (HIMSS) in Orlando, Florida on February 23rd.

MEDCIN is currently in use by over 35,000 clinicians supported by Medicomp's ten EMR partners and the U.S. Department of Defense Military Health System.
