DOBI Medical Systems, maker of an optical breast scanning system, has received a $7 million investment from the Sterling Financial Investment Group of Boca Raton, FL.

The DOBI (digital optical breast imaging) system is designed for use in the screening and diagnosis of breast cancer. An infrared beam scans the breast as time-lapse photography attempts to detect the vascular changes that may indicate the presence of cancer. The system, which has not yet been cleared by the FDA, is in clinical tests. The underlying technology was developed in Moscow in the early '90s.
