* New Electronic Health Records Repository Aggregates Data Across Lab, Hospital and Imaging Equipment with PDA-based Wireless Accessibility, as Showcased in the HL7-IHE Interoperability Demonstration * The XML-based Operational Data Server Delivers Integrated Information Sharing for Improved Healthcare, Patient Safety, Public Health Surveillance, Drug Discovery, Clinical Trials and Other Healthcare Uses * Packaged Support for HL7, IHE and CDISC, Interoperability with Microsoft BizTalk and NIST ebXML Registry Delivers Access to an Unprecedented Range of Patient and Trials-Related Data

Raining Data Corporation , a long-time provider of scalable, flexible and reliable data management software, today announced that its new TigerLogic XML Life Sciences Data Server supports key standards for enabling streamlined clinical drug trials and is able to act as a virtual electronic health records (vEHR) repository. TigerLogic, acting in concert with products from over 20 different vendors, is the sole vEHR repository for a demonstration coordinated by the standards organization Health Level Seven (HL7) and the Integrating the Healthcare Enterprise (IHE) initiative that takes place during the annual conference of the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS), in Orlando, Fla., from February 22-26, 2004.

The TigerLogic XML data repository is a leading operational data server that uses a patent-pending XML indexing and profiling technology to aggregate, store, and retrieve data of any type and from any source as XML files in the mid-tier -- the center of a data management architecture where information flows between end user computers and large-scale systems for tracking and processing health records and lab data.

Moreover, the TigerLogic XML Life Sciences Data Server delivers built-in support for healthcare delivery, lab testing, and data management standards, including: HL7's Clinical Document Architecture (CDA) and V3 XML lab messages; IHE's Retrieve Information for Display (RID) query; the Clinical Data Interchange Standards Consortium's (CDISC) laboratory (LAB), Operational Data Model (ODM), and Submissions Data Standard (SDS) specifications; and the National Institute of Standards and Technology's (NIST) ebXML healthcare registry, which could serve as a model for providing access to distributed healthcare documents, making it easier to find patient records.

"Healthcare and other life sciences organizations are realizing that embracing XML provides the interoperability and information flow required to continue to improve the quality and efficiency of care," said Liora Alschuler, project director for the 2004 Joint Demo and co-chair of the HL7 Structured Documents and Marketing Committees. "Raining Data's TigerLogic XML Life Sciences Data Server is a key component of this demonstration that uniquely provides vEHR repository functions. Along with our other participating vendors, Raining Data is helping us prove that integration, standards, and XML enable timely and flexible access to a wide range of information that can save lives."

The TigerLogic XML Life Science Data Server's ability to aggregate and deliver information are featured during the demonstration. Pulling from and sharing data with products from more than 20 other vendors, including Berdy, Dictaphone, Epic Systems, GE, Kodak, Microsoft, Misys and others, the TigerLogic server demonstrates how interoperable systems can be used to deliver better health care. For example, in the case of botulism reporting, TigerLogic captures and shares digital CDA forms to decrease the time between diagnosis and government agency response to what could be bioterrorism. Similarly, a tumor reporting scenario shows how a patient with cancerous tumors can get streamlined care, when X-Rays and other tests are digitally shared among everyone involved in the treatment, from surgeons, to primary care physicians, to insurance companies and hospital cancer registries.

The TigerLogic XML Life Sciences Data Server is designed from the ground up to provide data consistency across healthcare, pharmaceutical, and biotechnology information systems throughout various stages of drug development and trials by utilizing XML forms that adhere to the CDISC and HL7 standards.

Operational Data Servers for Life Sciences Systems Interoperability

The HL7-IHE interoperability demonstration illustrates the criticality of bringing together HL7, IHE, CDISC and other standards with high-performance, XML-based data management systems in the digital healthcare enterprise.

"Healthcare and pharmaceutical markets are leading the use of technology to improve the quality and efficiency of medical care. As a member of the HL7 and CDISC organizations, we know how important it is to establish a seamless flow of information across the healthcare enterprise," said Boris Geller, Vice President of Market Development for Raining Data. "Bringing together data in the right form at the right time is what our TigerLogic XML Life Sciences Data Server was built for. We're enabling hospitals, CRO's, PCP's, pharmaceutical firms, and other healthcare and drug research organizations to efficiently aggregate information across their enterprises and improve continuity of care, patient safety, public health, research, and reporting."

The TigerLogic XML Life Sciences Data Server fosters interoperability between systems through its open application programming interface, allowing it to be connected to any source in a healthcare enterprise without modification. This, in turn, simplifies the process of combining related health information -- such as the number and type of patient complaints from a hospital ER front desk, ECG and X-Ray imaging servers, and the doctor diagnoses from Dictaphones -- across different systems into a reusable collection of data available in a standard XML format. This is a sweeping innovation for an industry that is rapidly moving away from stacks of paper and proprietary data management systems.

Operational data servers also enhance the performance of data delivery, allowing healthcare organizations to react quickly during emergencies. The TigerLogic XML repository addresses performance in two ways. First, its query engine aggregates and retrieves data at speeds often hundreds of times faster than most other database alternatives. Second, its XML transformation engine makes it possible to bring data to nearly any device without additional programming, a capability that Raining Data is showing during the HL7 - IHE demonstration at HIMSS, when electronic patient records are wirelessly displayed on personal digital assistants (PDAs) right at the show floor.

Pricing and Availability

TigerLogic XML Life Sciences Data Server is immediately available on Windows 2000, Windows XP and Solaris platforms. Software license fee pricing starts at $25,000 per server and varies based on selected platforms and configurations. Support for HL7 CDA, IHE RID queries, CDISC, and other healthcare XML standards is bundled with the product.
