Drs. Charles Liu and Jonathan Russin discuss the benefits and potential of fPACT, the alternative to functional MRI.
When it comes to brain imaging, functional MRI – commonly called fMRI – is considered the gold standard. However, it can be costly, time consuming, and come with several restrictions that can prohibit use with certain patients.
In recent years, investigators have been searching for a different brain imaging method that can side-step these problems and potentially provide better quality scans at the same time. Researchers from the University of Southern California Keck School of Medicine and California Institute of Technology recently succeeded. They’ve developed functional photoacoustic computed tomography (fPACT) – a technique that works by emitting a laser beam of light into the area being imaged.
Drs. Charles Liu and Jonathan Russin join me to discuss the differences and benefits with fPACT.
FDA Clears Virtually Helium-Free 1.5T MRI System from Siemens Healthineers
June 26th 2025Offering a cost- and resource-saving DryCool magnet technology, the Magnetom Flow.Ace MRI system reportedly requires 0.7 liters of liquid helium for cooling over the lifetime of the device in contrast to over 1,000 liters commonly utilized with conventional MRI platforms.
Can CT-Based Deep Learning Bolster Prognostic Assessments of Ground-Glass Nodules?
June 19th 2025Emerging research shows that a multiple time-series deep learning model assessment of CT images provides 20 percent higher sensitivity than a delta radiomic model and 56 percent higher sensitivity than a clinical model for prognostic evaluation of ground-glass nodules.
