Toshiba America Medical Systemsreceived Food and Drug Administration clearance this month forXvision, its mid-tier helical CT scanner. Toshiba, of Tustin,CA, has been revamping its helical CT line since rolling out thepremium Xpress/SX scanner last year (SCAN 11/17/93 and 4/20/94).

Xvision is about half the size and nearly a third lighter thanstandard helical scanners and uses the same console as Xpressand the nonhelical Xpeed scanner. Xvision's gantry has been redesigned,however.

Toshiba hopes that Xvision will find expanded applicationsfor CT technology, such as the use of volumetric CT imaging inthe operating room to guide surgery.
