Japanese regulatory authorities have approved Elscint's VariCamadjustable-angle dual-head gamma camera for marketing in thatcountry. VariCam will be sold in Japan by Philips under a dealbetween the companies signed last year (SCAN 11/6/96). VariCamwill be the first Elscint product marketed in Japan, accordingto president and CEO Jonathan Adereth.
VariCam will take on products from Toshiba as well as Shimadzu,which markets Picker gamma cameras. Those companies dominate theJapanese nuclear medicine market, but neither firm has a variable-anglesystem. ADAC Laboratories, which does have a variable-angle camera,is still ramping up its presence in Japan after its dual-headproducts were approved in September (SCAN 10/9/96). ADAC is representedin Japan by Sumitomo Metal Industries.
