Improve Radiologists’ Access by Synchronizing Health Record and PACS

Video

[VIDEO] Merging health records and PACS can improve radiologists’ workflow. Cree M. Gaskin, MD, discusses the benefits and challenges of a new system.

The benefit of synchronizing health records and PACS is it makes the radiologist much more attuned with the patient when interpreting imaging studies, Cree M. Gaskin, MD, said in a recent video interview.

As health care becomes a paperless field, technology has provided a gateway for radiologists’ to receive all relevant patient information. The synchronization of health records and PACS eliminates the need for the radiologist to conduct manual searches, improving workflow efficiency. While radiologists currently use a RIS/PACS-driven workflow, with the merging of systems, and increase of access, the health record can now drive the workflow.

“There are plenty of times when the radiologists don’t know what they don’t know,” Gaskin said of the current disconnect between the health record and PACS. The health record-driven workflow enables a “one-stop shop” for radiologists, he added.
