A U.K. radiologist has created a winning design in a competition to create a commemorative coin for the 2012 Olympics, to be held in London.

A U.K. radiologist has created a winning design in a competition to create a commemorative coin for the 2012 Olympics, to be held in London. Ruth Summerfield, based at the University Hospital of North Staffordshire, entered the competition after seeing it advertised in a national newspaper, and was inspired to design a fencing coin as she has a friend who is a keen participant in the sport. Her creation is one in a series of 29 officially licensed London 2012 commemorative coins, and will now be found on millions of 50 pence coins in the U.K. Before entering circulation, the coin had to obtain final approval from the Treasury and the Queen.
