Can a New AI-Powered Point-Of-Care Ultrasound Platform Enhance Reporting Efficiency and Compliance?

Author(s)Jeff Hall

The newly launched Compass AI software platform reportedly facilitates a 94 percent compliance rate for documentation of point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) exams.

Butterfly Network has launched the enterprise imaging software platform Compass AI, which may bolster documentation compliance and reimbursement revenue for point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) exams.

The company noted that Compass AI offers a variety of key attributes including:

• ambient voice dictation through the Documentation Agent feature, which facilitates up to a 25 percent reduction in charting time by enabling note completion during POCUS exams;

• a QA Agent feature that accelerates turnaround with AI-enabled image review and feedback on quality assurance; and

• seamless integration into EHR, PACS and SSO platforms to allow direct routing of POCUS studies into the medical record.1

Separate studies published in the American Journal of Emergency Medicine and the Journal of Digital Imaging have reportedly shown that Compass AI offers a 94 percent documentation compliance rate for POCUS exams and up to a fivefold increase in revenue in comparison to compliant studies from traditional POCUS workflows, according to Butterfly Network.2,3

“Health systems want to expand POCUS and capture more value, but they’ve been held back by undocumented exams, compliance risk and administrative burden that take clinicians away from patients,” said Joseph DeVivo, the president, CEO and chairman of Butterfly Network. “Compass AI changes that. It gives organizations the workflows and interoperability to manage POCUS programs at scale — no blind spots, no fragmented care, no added risk. To me, it’s a path to easy money: capturing value that was already there, just being missed.”
